Orrin Evans (Philly's jazz mayor at multiple venues over the years including the fabled Ortlieb's Jazzhaus), will perform with his high caliber trio and with special guest Ravi Coltrane on saxophone at the Newmark Theater in Portland, Oregon.

Africa/Brass Ensemble
The Africa/Brass Ensemble, under the direction of Portland Jazz Master and PSU Professor Emeritus Charles Gray with special guest Ravi Coltrane, brings John Coltrane's first Impulse! album Africa/Brass into focus 55 years after the music was first recorded. All five selections culled from the two recording sessions have been transcribed by Gray for this For Portland Only occasion. Portland's finest musicians hand selected by Gray featuring unusual instrumentation of french horn and euphonium will project a big band sound supported by the rhythm section lead by Philadelphia native and McCoy Tyner disciple, Orrin Evans. This concert is one of two centerpiece performances featuring Ravi as part of the festival's Coltrane @ 90 themed celebration.

Big Band Winner
SF Jazz High School All-Stars Orchestra won the Jazz Forward Competition earlier in the day. One the benefits of winning is to participate in the being an opening act for a major concert in the Portland Jazz Festival, in this case, opening for the Africa-Brass Ensemble featuring Ravi Coltrane, Charles Gray and Orrin Evans.
