Iris Shanks was born in San Francisco, California, and grew up in Sacramento. She started playing trumpet in elementary school, then studied pop vocal performance and performed as a singer/songwriter for six years prior to coming to Lewis & Clark. When she arrived at Lewis & Clark, she decided to become a music and English double-major and developed a love for classical singing. Over the last four years, she has studied voice with Susan McBerry, sung in the Women's Chorus with Margaret Green, and sung in Cappella Nova chamber choir, where she is currently the soprano section leader. She has also participated in the Opera and Musical Theatre Workshop, both as a performer and as stage manager. In addition to her curricular singing opportunities, Iris has been a dedicated member of the student-led a cappella singing group Momo and the Coop, where she has served both as a singer and arranger. Iris is grateful that music has brought her to fascinating places, including Argentina and Spain with her high school band, Hawaii with Cappella Nova, and London with the Lewis & Clark fine arts study abroad program.
