Joy Spring: Celebrating Clifford Brown
Featuring Charlie Porter
Thursday 14 April 2016 | 7:30 pm
Alberta Abbey, Portland, Oregon

Although Clifford Brown left behind only four years worth of studio recordings before his untimely death in 1956 at the mere age of 25, his impact as a jazz trumpeter is undeniable. In his short and stunning career, "Brownie" gigged and/or recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Sarah Vaughn, Harold Land, Lou Donaldson, and his most enduring collaborator Max Roach. Brown's compositions such as "Joy Spring", "Cherokee", "Delilah" and "Daahoud" remain as classic tunes of the bop era.

Presented in partnership with the Soul'd Out Music Festival, Joy Spring: Celebrating Clifford Brown will shine the spotlight on Charlie Porter, perhaps the best jazz trumpet player the Pacific Northwest has to offer, who will offer his take on Brownie's classic songs, style and melodies. Joining Porter will be David Evans (saxophone), Dan Gaynor (piano), Tom Wakeling (bass) and Christopher Brown (drums), all fantastic Portland-based musicians in their own right.
